The Death of the Monthly Tool Audit (And What Replaced It)

I used to spend a day each month re-testing AI tools for my stack reviews. The tools now change faster than any audit cycle can capture, so I stopped.

Every AI newsletter eventually runs the stack audit: here is what I use, retested and re-ranked. I wrote my share of them. This month I stopped, and the reason is structural rather than laziness: the audit cadence assumed tools changed quarterly, and they now change weekly.

In the last thirty days alone, two of the tools in my carefully ranked list shipped major model updates, one changed its pricing model entirely, and one killed the feature I recommended it for. The published audit was stale within a fortnight, and worse, it was confidently stale, which is the kind of wrong that spreads.

What replaced it is less satisfying and more honest: a living page, updated when something actually changes, with a changelog. No rankings, just what I currently use and what I dropped, with the reason in one sentence. Traffic-wise it loses to a definitive top-ten list; trust-wise it wins, because readers can watch the reasoning update in public.

There is a broader lesson in the death of my audit habit. Evaluation is becoming continuous rather than episodic, and the teams that win at AI tooling are not the ones that pick right once; they are the ones with a cheap, routine way to notice when a choice stops being right. The audit was a snapshot of a moving target, and motion won.

So let the monthly audit rest. Keep a short list, keep the receipts, and get comfortable saying I changed my mind. In a market that reprices weekly, the most valuable review is the one dated last Tuesday.
