The catch used to be quality, and it was real. The catch now is speed on consumer hardware and the occasional weird failure the big models handle. But for drafting, summarizing, and coding help, local is enough.
The appeal isn't just privacy, it's ownership. A model I run doesn't change pricing or terms overnight, doesn't log my prompts, and works on a plane. That stability has value the benchmarks miss.
I still reach for the cloud model for the hard reasoning. But the fact that I don't have to, for most of my day, is the story of 2026 that didn't get a launch event.
