Mistral Large 4 Is the Sovereignty Argument Made Concrete
A trillion-parameter model trained and served in Europe matters more than the benchmark.
Mistral released Large 4 on October 6 -- a trillion-parameter multimodal model with open weights promised by month's end, trained and served in its own European datacenters. Independent testers rank it as the best model built outside the US and China.
The pitch isn't 'beats GPT.' It's 'you can actually host it and the servers are on your continent.' For regulated buyers, sovereignty is a feature, not a slogan.
Caveat from the same testers: on raw intelligence it still trails several open models from China. So Mistral is selling control and locality, and pricing it accordingly at a launch promo around $0.68 in.
If your data can't leave a jurisdiction, Large 4 is the first front-tier option that fits. Everyone else is weighing capability against where the bytes live.
