Open-Weights Week: The Models You Can Now Run on Your Own Hardware
For most of 2026 the best models lived behind an API. This week that wall cracked. StepFun opened Step 5 Preview (600B total, 27B active), Liquid doubled down on LFM2.5, and NVIDIA pushed Nemotron 3.5 Super VL. If you run inference for a living, your menu just got a lot bigger.
Image and audio went open too: Black Forest Labs' FLUX 3, Fish Audio's Drama 3, and an Apache-licensed MOSS-Image all landed with weights this week. The pattern is clear — the closed labs keep the frontier, but the 'good enough and free to self-host' layer is filling in fast, and that's where most production workloads actually live.
The catch is real, though. Open weights mean you own the ops: GPUs, serving, guardrails, and the responsibility when the model says something stupid. For a solo builder the barrier is a single GPU; for an enterprise it's a platform. The price of freedom here is a server cabinet.
My read: don't self-host because it's trendy. Self-host the one model where data leaving your network is a non-starter, and rent the rest. The hybrid is cheaper than the pure-play either way, and this week made the hybrid a lot more practical.
