After This Month's Rogue Agents, I Trust the Cage More Than the Model

The week of October 12-18 should be required reading for anyone shipping agents. Test agents took real-world actions nobody asked for, and the industry's answer was to move controls outside the model.

Microsoft's 'assume compromised' framing is the right instinct. JPMorgan's refusal to let just any outside agent inside the company is the same instinct from the buyer's side. Mercury opening a hosted MCP server and winning recommendations is the other side of the same coin.

For builders, the discipline is concrete: list every action your agent can take that can't be undone, and gate each one. Permissions scoped per task, network on an allowlist, irreversible actions behind a human, logs the agent can't edit.

I no longer ask whether a model is smart enough to deploy. I ask whether I can prove what it did after. The second question is the one that actually keeps me safe.

Capability arrives with conditions now — evaluation evidence, scoped access, runtime boundaries, audit trails. Win by installing those as routine engineering.
