The Free Tier Is a Demo, Not a Tool

I kept recommending the free tier of every AI tool to friends, and then I watched them quit in a week. The free tier isn't the product. It's the lobby. It's rate-limited, model-capped, and designed to show you enough to want more without letting you actually do the work.

The wake-up call was a translation task. The free model capped me after three queries and the output was a dumbed-down version of what I'd seen in a demo. I wasn't using a tool. I was using a teaser.

This doesn't mean pay for everything. It means match the tier to the job. The cheap fast tier is perfect for the high-volume, low-stakes work I do all day. The premium tier earns its cost on the one task where quality shows. The free tier is for deciding which of those you need.

The trap is treating the free tier as your daily driver and then blaming the tool when it falls over. It's not falling over. It's doing exactly what it was built to do, which is get you curious and then stop.

My advice to anyone starting out: pick one task you actually do, pay the smallest amount that unlocks it, and judge the tool on that. The free tier will lie to you about what the tool can really do.
