Make

I built the same three-step automation on both tools in the same week: watch a form submission, enrich it with an AI call, then push the result into a spreadsheet and a Slack channel. The Zapier version took twenty minutes. The Make version took three hours and looked like spaghetti. The interesting part is what happened after that, when I ran both for a month.

Setup is where Zapier wins and it is not close. The trigger-and-action model means you pick a source app, pick a destination, map the fields, and it works. Make is a visual programming tool - you build a canvas with modules, branches and transformations. That power is real, and it is also why my first Make automation had a mapping bug that took an afternoon to find.

Then the bills arrived. Zapier charges per task, and a task is roughly any step an automation performs, so a three-step flow burns three tasks per run. Make counts operations at a much finer grain but sells generous operation allowances, and for anything beyond a handful of steps the difference is not marginal. My monthly automation cost dropped by about two thirds simply by moving the same logic.

The part I did not expect was reliability in reverse. Zapier's failure messages are clear and its library of app connections is enormous - I found native connectors for tools I would never have hand-integrated. Make needed webhooks and a formatter step for two of my apps, which means I now maintain code that a Zapier user would get for free.

So the honest answer depends on who is running it. If a non-technical person owns the workflow and it touches mainstream apps, Zapier is worth the premium for the connector library and the error messages. If someone technical owns it, the workflow has branching or loops, or the volume makes per-task pricing painful, Make wins on cost and capability. The overlap zone is small.

The migration advice nobody writes: do not move a working Zapier for the sake of being on the cheaper tool. Move it when it starts costing real money, or when the flow needs logic Zapier cannot express. Until then, the time you spend rebuilding is worth more than the money you save.

Frequently asked questions:

Q: Is Make really cheaper than Zapier?

A: For multi-step automations, yes, and the gap widens with complexity. Zapier bills per task, which roughly means per step, while Make bills per operation with much larger allowances included. For a simple two-step flow the difference is small; for branching workflows it is not.

Q: Which one is easier for a non-technical user?

A: Zapier, clearly. The trigger-and-action builder needs no mental model of the system, and the error messages tell you what broke. Make assumes you understand data mapping and will let you debug at 11pm without complaining.

Q: Can I migrate a Zapier to Make?

A: Yes, but it is a rebuild rather than an export. The trigger names map, the field mapping does not. Migrate one workflow at a time, keep the old one running in parallel for a month, and let the logs tell you whether the new one is actually equivalent.
