The AI Tools That Died Quietly Taught Me More Than the Launches

For every model that launches with a splash, a tool dies without a sound. The quiet deaths teach more than the launches, if you keep a list.

For every model that launches with a splash, a tool dies without a sound, and the quiet deaths teach more than the launches. I kept a list of things I stopped using.

The pattern: a tool that did one narrow thing got absorbed into a bigger platform, or the thing it did became a checkbox in something I already paid for. Standalone novelty has a short half-life.

A few from this year: the dedicated summarizer I dropped when Notion's AI covered it, the meeting bot that lost to the one already in my calendar. None were bad; they were redundant, which is a different kind of failure.

The lesson for buyers: ask not 'what can this do' but 'what will this replace,' and whether that thing is already in your stack. Most AI purchases are duplicating a feature you have, not filling a hole.
