AI Writing Tools Made My Prose Blander, Then I Fixed It

Grammarly's rephrase button and the 'make it clearer' command in my chatbot both nudged me toward the same beige corporate voice, and I didn't notice until a friend asked if I'd hired a PR firm. The tools optimize for correct and safe, which is the enemy of voice, and over a few months that voice was mine.

The trap is treating the assistant as a final pass. A rephrase suggestion is a crutch; a grammar check is a safety net. I'd been leaning on the crutch without realizing it, and my sentences got shorter, flatter, and interchangeable. Nothing was wrong, exactly - it just could have been written by anyone.

The fix was simple and a little humbling: I write the way I actually talk first, then use the tool only to catch the grammar I genuinely got wrong, and I reject every suggestion that flattens a sentence I meant to land. The draft stays mine; the tool cleans up the typos.

If your writing feels like it could have come from a thousand other people, the assistant is probably doing too much of the thinking. Keep it on the typos and let the voice stay yours - that's the part readers remember.
