The EU AI Act Deadline Nobody's Ready For

By December 2, generative AI on the EU market needs machine-readable watermarking. Most teams I ask have not started.

The European AI Office and national authorities began their first compliance inspection wave, and the next hard deadline is December 2, 2026: generative AI systems already on the EU market before August must implement machine-readable marking or watermarking of outputs. If you ship text, image, or audio to EU users, that clock is loud.

The confusion is about who's responsible. If your provider watermarks, you might be covered. If it doesn't, or you layer your own generation on top, you may need your own disclosure layer. Most teams I've asked haven't checked which bucket they're in, which is a problem with a date attached.

The practical step is dull: read your provider's watermarking docs, and if there's a gap, add a disclosure at your output boundary. The regulation isn't asking for perfection, it's asking for a mark a machine can read and a human can verify. That's achievable if you start before December.

This is the deadline that will quietly bite small teams who assumed the AI Act was a big-company problem. It isn't. If EU users touch your generated content, the watermark is now your problem, and December is closer than the backlog suggests.
