The '44% Faster' Claim and What It Hid
GPT-6's search answers come back 44% sooner, OpenAI says. True, and also a number that hides what you're giving up for the speed.
OpenAI says GPT-6 answers search questions about 44% sooner than the prior instant model. That's a real, measurable win for the everyday lookup, and I felt it: questions I'd have skipped now get answered fast enough that I ask them.
The number hides the trade, though. Faster answers lean on the interactive UI and tighter routing, which can mean a lighter reasoning pass on questions that needed the heavy one. Speed is great until the quick answer is the shallow one.
I've learned to read the 44% as 'faster for the easy stuff,' not 'smarter everywhere.' For 'what's the capital of X' it's a gift. For 'should I restructure this' it's a temptation to accept the snappy version.
Benchmark-style claims travel further than the caveats. The honest version is: materially faster where it's simple, and you still have to know when simple isn't enough.
