The Cheapest Model Usually Wins, and I Was Late to Admit It

I had a favorite model and reached for it by reflex until I noticed I was using the wrong tool for half my tasks and calling it consistency. Brand loyalty to one model is a quiet tax, and I was paying it without a receipt.

The same question gets a better answer from a different model depending on the job. Long documents go to the one with the strong summarization scores; sourced research goes to the one that shows its citations; image work goes to a specialist. Using one for all of them means a slightly worse result you don't notice because you never compared.

The cost isn't failure, it's the compound of small-worse across a workday. A slightly-off answer here, a slightly-slower task there, and the week adds up to real time and real quality you left on the table. At this point the price gap at the top has narrowed to almost nothing, so the default of always paying premium stopped making sense.

I built a tiny mental map instead of a loyalty. General writing and coding go to the all-rounder; the specialist jobs go to the specialist; the high-volume mechanical stuff goes to the cheap fast model. Five minutes picking the right tool beats an hour polishing the wrong one's output.

Versatility is a feature, not a mandate. The best model is the one you don't use for the job it's worst at, and I stopped letting habit decide that.
