The Context Window Is a Bigger Room to Lose Things In
A million-token context sounds like it ends the need to manage memory. It doesn't. A bigger window just means more places to quietly forget the part that mattered.
A million-token context sounds like it ends the need to manage memory. It doesn't. A bigger window just means more places for the model to quietly forget the part that mattered.
I pasted a long document and asked a question about page one after a discussion of page fifty. The answer drifted because the model weighted the recent stuff, window or not. Length isn't comprehension.
The tools that win aren't the ones with the biggest number, they're the ones that retrieve the right slice, summarize the rest, and let you see what was pulled. A window without retrieval is a bigger room to lose things in.
Don't pick a model by its context size. Pick by whether it shows you what it's looking at. A smaller window with good retrieval beats a huge one that hides its work every time.
