The Quiet Death of the Chat Window
We said the chatbot box was the future. A month of agents and embedded assistants suggests the box was just a first draft.
For three years the product was a text box you typed into. This month's releases point somewhere else: GPT-6's buttons and tools inside the answer, Claude living in your Docs sidebar, agents acting across apps. The standalone chat window is starting to look like a placeholder.
That's not a funeral. The box is still where hard thinking happens. But the everyday assistant is leaking out of it, into the documents, the calendars, the checkout pages where the work actually is.
I find I open the raw chat less and the embedded helper more. When the model is already where my task lives, I don't need to copy context into a box and back out. The box was always a translation step.
The future isn't no chat, it's chat that knows where it is. The window was the easy first version; the useful one meets you in the work.
