Why I Still Pay for Three Writing Assistants (and What Each Is Actually For)
Consolidation logic says one tool should win. My invoices disagree, and a month of tracking showed why: they are not the same job wearing different logos.
The rational move is to cancel two of my three writing subscriptions and keep the best one. I tracked every writing task for a month instead, and the data said something consolidation logic cannot hear: the tools do not overlap as much as their landing pages claim.
The frontier chatbot takes the work where thinking is the product: positioning arguments, difficult emails, structural rewrites of documents that are confused rather than badly written. It is the colleague you bring the problem to, not the draft.
The marketing-specific assistant owns anything that repeats. Product descriptions, campaign variants, the fortyth email in a sequence, its brand voice memory means the twenty-first draft needs the same corrections as the second, which no general chatbot achieves without me pasting a style guide every morning. Consistency at volume is a different feature from brilliance on demand.
The grammar-and-style editor takes the last mile. It catches the typos, the passive constructions, and the creeping comma sprawl after I have already fallen in love with the text, which is exactly why it must be a separate tool: models that write your draft will not edit it honestly, and a second pair of eyes that costs twenty dollars a month is cheap.
The month's tally: roughly equal time in all three, near-zero task switching, and better output than any single-tool month I have recorded. Specialization is the boring answer, but the boring answer is what the data said. Three invoices, one workflow, no regrets, and a small pile of evidence that best-of-breed survived the AI consolidation story after all.
