What Actually Shipped in AI's First Half of 2026 (Not What Was Announced)

Separating the demos from the deployments. A midyear reality check from someone keeping score.

Every January the industry announces the future. By July you can tell which of those announcements became software and which became slides.

Shipped: genuinely usable on-device translation, voice cloning that passes for real in controlled settings, and code assistants that most professional developers now keep open all day. Those changed daily work.

Announced but stalled: the fully autonomous agent that runs your business, the universal personal assistant that knows everything about you, the model that reasons like a PhD on anything. Still mostly demos.

The pattern is consistent. Things that augment a person shipped. Things that replace a person stalled. Augmentation is a product. Replacement is a research project wearing a press release.

My midyear bet: the second half belongs to boring integrations, not breakthroughs. The breakthroughs already happened. Now someone has to make them usable before lunch.
