Why I Keep a Dumb Phone for My AI-Free Hours

Every tool wants to be the one I talk to all day. I bought a phone that can't, and the silence turned out to be the feature.

I got tired of the always-available assistant voice in my pocket, so I bought a cheap flip phone and kept my smartphone for work hours only. The first week was annoying; the second week I noticed I was thinking in full sentences again instead of dictating fragments.

The AI part isn't the only offender, but it's the most persuasive. A model that will draft the text, summarize the thread, and plan the reply removes the small friction where I used to actually decide things. Off the grid for an evening, those decisions came back to me.

I'm not anti-tool. I just want a boundary that isn't a willpower test. The dumb phone is a physical one: no app, no agent, no 'would you like me to.' For a few hours the machine stops offering to do my thinking.

If you can't go that far, try one AI-free evening a week. The point isn't luddism, it's remembering what your own unfiltered judgment sounds like before the helpers chime in.
