AI Tool Comparison

Bolt vs Cursor: Building From a Blank Page vs Editing a Real Codebase

Both are AI coding tools, but one starts when the project does and the other starts when the hard part begins. I prototyped in one and shipped in the other.

The honest comparison

Bolt and Cursor both write code with AI, and I have now used each for its natural habitat: a weekend prototype in Bolt and two months of production work in Cursor. They represent the two ends of a software project's life, and most of the confusion in comparisons comes from reviewing them as if they do the same job.

Bolt is magic for the first ninety minutes of any project. Describe the app, watch it build a running prototype in the browser, connect a backend, deploy. My weekend dashboard went from prompt to shareable URL in an evening, and for validating whether an idea deserves real engineering, nothing is faster. The wall arrives with scale: as files multiplied, the AI lost the plot, refactors became gambles, and I was maintaining generated code I had never truly read.

Cursor is where the hard part lives. It is a real editor with AI woven through, and its advantage is context: multi-file edits that understand the codebase, composer sessions that execute a refactor across a dozen files, and inline completions that know my conventions because they can see my conventions. It assumes you can read code and have a codebase, and it made me faster at exactly the work Bolt falls over on.

The handoff between them is real and I lived it: prototype in Bolt to prove the idea, then rebuild properly in Cursor once the idea survives contact with users. Skipping Bolt is also legitimate, because for anything you already know you will maintain, starting in Cursor from commit one costs little and saves a rewrite.

Verdict: if you cannot code or the goal is a throwaway validation of an idea, Bolt will feel like superpowers. If you write software for a living, Cursor is the meaningful upgrade and Bolt is a toy you will outgrow by week two. The mature take is that they are sequential, not competing: Bolt answers should this exist, Cursor answers how do I maintain the thing that exists.
