Canva is the tool you open when the deliverable is a file: a slide, a post, a one-pager. Luma AI is what you open when the deliverable is a moving image you can't easily shoot. They overlap only at the edges, which is exactly why people pit them against each other.
Canva's strength is constraint. Templates, brand kits, and a grid keep non-designers from shipping something embarrassing. Luma's strength is the opposite: you describe a camera move and it generates footage that didn't exist, which is thrilling and unpredictable.
I used both on a product announcement. Canva built the invite in ten minutes; Luma generated a slow orbit around the product that I dropped into the video. Canva never could have made that shot, and Luma would have been useless for the invite.
