The honest comparison
I ran both on the same machine, side by side, for three weeks, doing the same real work. Not a benchmark. My actual job: drafting, research, rewriting angry emails into calm ones.
ChatGPT felt faster and looser. It is happy to guess, it is happy to be wrong confidently, and for brainstorming that is a feature. Claude felt more careful, more likely to say "here is the part I am unsure about," which I came to trust more than I expected.
The thing that made me delete ChatGPT (temporarily, I reinstalled it) was the editing. Claude reads a long document and does not quietly forget the middle. If your work is long-form, that alone is worth the switch.
