Stop Asking ChatGPT to Do Perplexity's Job (and Vice Versa).

I kept reaching for ChatGPT to answer 'who said this and when,' and getting a confident paragraph with zero links. Perplexity answered the same question with a citation per sentence. That was the week I admitted they aren't interchangeable and started routing by intent.

ChatGPT is the better thinking partner. Give it a messy problem and it pushes back, offers structure, writes the draft. Perplexity is the better librarian. Ask 'what changed in EU AI rules this month' and you get a dated trail you can click, not a smooth summary that might be from 2023.

The failure mode for each is using it as the other. ChatGPT will invent a statute number that sounds right; I've caught it. Perplexity will give you sources but rarely tell you what to do with them, which is fine until your boss wants a decision, not a reading list.

My rule now: facts-with-attribution go to Perplexity; reasoning-and-drafting go to ChatGPT. When I need both, I ask Perplexity for the cites, paste them into ChatGPT, and say 'based only on these, what should I do.' That combo is stricter than either alone and caught three of ChatGPT's usual confabulations.

Verdict: Perplexity when you must show your work, ChatGPT when you're still figuring out the work. Picking one and forcing it to be the other just means more edits later.
