AI Tool Comparison
I Paid for Cursor and Still Jump to ChatGPT. The Split Actually Makes Sense.
Cursor lives inside the repo. ChatGPT lives inside the browser tab. I kept both open for a quarter before admitting they do different jobs.

Cursor
AI-first code editor for developers
Cursor is an AI-powered code editor designed to help developers write, refactor, and understand code faster with built-in AI assistance.
ChatGPT
AI assistant for writing, coding, and research
ChatGPT is one of the most popular AI tools for writing, brainstorming, coding help, research, and everyday productivity tasks.
The honest comparison
Cursor is the tool I reach for when the code is already in front of me. It sees the file, suggests the edit, and applies it without a copy-paste dance. For 'fix this function' it's faster than anything, and the inline diff view means I'm not pasting untrusted output blindly.
ChatGPT is where I go when there's no code yet. 'Sketch a retry queue with backoff' or 'what's the cleanest way to debounce this' gets a fuller answer with tradeoffs spelled out. Cursor can do that too, but it's tuned for editing, not for the blank-page brainstorm, and the context window fight inside a big repo gets noisy.
The overlap that wastes money: I was pasting stack traces into ChatGPT out of habit when Cursor's terminal error explanation was right there. Once I noticed, my ChatGPT coding tab stayed closed most days.
Verdict: Cursor if your work is in the codebase; ChatGPT if your work is in your head. Most developers I know need both, but the second one is cheaper to downgrade than the first.
