Cursor vs Windsurf: Two Weeks Rebuilding the Same Feature in Each

I ported one messy legacy feature twice, once in each AI IDE. The winner depended on whether I wanted a colleague or an autopilot.

Windsurf

Agentic IDE that codes alongside you

Windsurf (formerly Codeium) is an AI-first IDE whose agent can read your whole project, make multi-file edits, and keep you in flow while you review.

The honest comparison

I picked a genuinely unpleasant task, adding SSO to a four-year-old Next.js app with pre-existing auth shortcuts, and did it once in Cursor and once in Windsurf, tracking prompts, context resets, and how often I had to take the wheel back.

Cursor felt like a senior pair programmer with strong opinions. Its multi-file edits were decisive, and the agent mode handled the boring scaffolding, env plumbing, and middleware wiring without ceremony. When I disagreed, taking manual control was instant and frictionless, which kept me in flow.

Windsurf's Cascade tried harder to understand the whole project before acting, and on the messiest file in the codebase that thoroughness paid off once: it spotted an existing session helper I would have duplicated. But the same thoroughness sometimes meant long planning turns where I just wanted the diff already.

Latency and trust were the real differentiators. Cursor's edits came back fast enough that I reviewed them like code review comments, small and frequent. Windsurf's bigger autonomous runs made me review larger chunks at once, which sounds efficient and is actually worse, because a mistake buried in a 400-line agent diff costs more to untangle than four small ones.

I kept Cursor as my daily driver, mostly for speed and the feeling of staying in command. Windsurf is genuinely good, and if your codebase is a labyrinth that punishes shallow context, its deeper indexing will earn its keep. The uncomfortable truth is that both made me faster enough that the deciding factor was interface temperament, not capability.
