AI Tool Comparison

ChatGPT wrote my deck's content. Gamma made it presentable. That order matters.

Asking a chatbot to make slides gets you a text file with slide breaks. Asking Gamma to think for you gets you a pretty deck of nothing. I use both, in one direction only.

ChatGPT

AI assistant for writing, coding, and research

ChatGPT is one of the most popular AI tools for writing, brainstorming, coding help, research, and everyday productivity tasks.

The honest comparison

People keep asking chatbots to 'make a presentation about X' and getting a markdown file with asterisks where slides should be. I did it for a year. The content was usually decent! The output was never a deck — it was a script pretending to be one. Gamma exists because that gap is annoying enough to pay for.

My current flow for a client pitch: outline the argument in ChatGPT first, including the parts I'll cut. It's better at pushback — I'll say 'poke holes in this story' and get useful objections. Then I paste the surviving outline into Gamma and let it build. Gamma's layout taste is genuinely good, and editing a Gamma deck is faster than fighting PowerPoint shapes.

The reverse order fails in a specific way. If I start in Gamma, it generates plausible slides full of generic claims — 'Streamline your workflow with powerful insights' — and I spend the next hour deleting filler. Pretty is not the same as argued. The thinking has to happen before the slides exist.

Where ChatGPT alone still wins: tiny decks. Five internal slides for a Tuesday meeting, my team shares raw text and nobody makes slides at all. Gamma earns its keep the moment the deck will be seen by someone whose opinion matters — clients, investors, a conference room.

Pricing is close enough not to decide it. If you only present occasionally, ChatGPT plus a template is fine. If decks are a weekly thing, Gamma pays for itself in hours saved, as long as you bring it an argument instead of asking it to have one for you.
