The honest comparison
Gemini is in my Gmail and Drive, so I figured I'd just code with it too and drop the dedicated editor. A week in, I went back to Cursor for one boring reason: it touches the files.
Asking Gemini to fix a bug means pasting the file, getting code, pasting back, and noticing it forgot the import two functions down. The model is sharp, but the gap between 'answer' and 'applied' ate my time.
Cursor's edge is boring and total: it reads the actual project, edits in place, and the diff is right there. Gemini wins when the work is 'answer a question about my life.' It loses when the work is 'change this repo.'
If you code occasionally and live in Google, Gemini gets you far. If you live in a codebase, the editor that edits beats the chatbot that advises, every single time.
