Leonardo Is a Workshop. Luma Is a Camera. I Needed Both and Hated It.

I make visual assets for a small indie studio — character portraits, item icons, the occasional animated trailer. Leonardo handles the first two natively. Luma was supposed to handle the trailer. The month was about finding out where the overlap actually is.

Leonardo's strength is control. Trained models on our own art style, consistent character generation across dozens of icons, fine-tuned upscaling. It behaves like a workshop tool with a schedule. When the studio needed 40 item icons that look like one artist drew them, Leonardo did it in an afternoon.

Luma cannot do consistency, and I stopped asking it to. What it does instead is motion — and for the trailer, its generated shots had a fluidity that saved us from storyboarding entirely. The cost is that every generation is a small gamble; maybe one in four shots was usable.

If you're choosing one: consistency and volume means Leonardo, motion and mood means Luma. Our pipeline uses both and I've stopped pretending that's inefficient. The inefficiency would be forcing either one to fake the other's specialty.
