Luma AI provides tools for 3D capture, realistic rendering, and next-gen AI video workflows.
Pika
Idea-to-video generation for creators
Pika turns text prompts and images into short generated video clips, with effects and camera moves aimed at social-first creators.
The honest comparison
I ran five representative shot types through Pika and Luma Dream Machine the same week: a product hero shot, a dramatic camera move, a physics-heavy effect, a character performance moment, and a straight text-to-video first attempt. The wins split almost perfectly down the middle, which tells you these tools are converging on different tastes.
Luma won the things that feel like cinematography. Camera moves were smoother and more physically plausible, the product hero shot had better light behavior, and its image-to-video handled my still photos with fewer morphing artifacts. If your mental model is 'a camera operator who takes prompts,' Luma is currently that.
Pika won the things that feel like effects. Its Pikaffects (squish, explode, inflate and friends) are genuinely useful for social content, its physics-heavy generations committed to the bit more often, and the editing tools around the generation (modify region, add elements) made fixing the third generation faster than regenerating it.
Character moments split by temperament. Luma's characters moved more naturally but wandered off-brief; Pika's stayed on-brief but with a subtle stiffness. Neither is at the level where you would put a generated character in front of a client without a disclaimer, and both charge you credits for discovering that.
The practical answer for a solo creator: they are cheap enough to hold both, and the shot type should pick the engine. Cinematic and image-driven goes to Luma, effects and social-native goes to Pika. My own usage settled at roughly two-thirds Luma, one-third Pika, which I would not have predicted before running the five-shot test.
