Midjourney Makes the Frame. Luma Makes It Move. I Stopped Confusing Them.

A client wanted a 30-second teaser built entirely from generated visuals. I figured Midjourney could do the stills and Luma could do the motion, but I wanted to know if either could replace the other. Short answer: no, and the attempt is expensive.

Midjourney's stills are the best in the business and it isn't close. Lighting, texture, that slightly editorial look clients point at and say 'that one.' Luma's frames, by comparison, look like very good video game stills — impressive until you put them side by side with Midjourney and see what's missing.

Luma's actual trick is motion. Feeding it my Midjourney stills and asking for a slow push-in worked shockingly well, and the teaser became possible without a camera crew. But ask Luma for a standalone beautiful image and it hands you something with the composition of a stock photo from 2014.

The workflow that survived the week: Midjourney for every frame, Luma for every frame that needs to breathe. If your budget forces one, buy based on whether your output is a wall (still) or a screen (moving). I genuinely can't pick a winner because they never competed.
