The honest comparison
I had a campaign that needed both a hero still and a short clip. I tried to do both in Midjourney first, because I knew it. The still was gorgeous. The 'motion' feature gave me something uncanny that I couldn't use.
Runway took the same concept and made a clip with actual camera movement, which is its whole reason to exist. Midjourney is a photographer; Runway is a director. Asking the photographer to shoot a movie is asking for a slideshow.
The reverse is also true. Runway can produce a single frame, but it won't have the compositional soul Midjourney brings to a still. For a poster, Midjourney. For a reel, Runway.
My rule now is medium-first: am I making a picture or a video? Answer that and the tool picks itself. Mixing them up is how I ended up with a beautiful image and a clip nobody wanted.
