Notion AI and Zapier Aren't Rivals. I Tried Using Them Like They Were.

For a month I kept asking which one to drop, Notion AI or Zapier, like they were two subscriptions fighting for the same drawer. They weren't. Notion AI lives inside the document and helps you write, summarize, and fill fields. Zapier lives between apps and moves a row from a form into a sheet and then into a Slack message. The overlap is close to zero.

The moment it clicked: I used Notion AI to draft a client update inside a project page, then a Zap to push that page's status to a tracker every Friday. Notion AI never leaves the note. Zapier never touches the prose. They handshake at the database, not at the keyboard.

Where people get stuck is thinking Notion AI can 'automate.' It can summarize a meeting note, sure, but it won't email the action items to six people on a schedule. That's Zapier's lane, and Zapier is terrible at writing the email so it doesn't sound like a robot. So you use both, in series, and stop comparing them.

My rule now: if the job is words on a page, it's Notion AI. If the job is a thing moving from app A to app B while I sleep, it's Zapier. The only time they truly compete is in my budget, and even there the answer is keep both.
