AI Tool Comparison
Perplexity finds the answers, Notion buries them — here's how I split my research between them
I tried living in Notion AI for research because my notes already lived there. Two weeks later, half my work moved back to Perplexity and my notes got shorter.

The honest comparison
The pitch that got me: everything in one place. Notes, sources, AI Q&A, all inside Notion where my projects already live. So for two weeks I did all research inside Notion AI — competitor scans, feature comparisons, background reading for articles. The results were fine for questions about my own notes and quietly bad for questions about the outside world.
Notion AI is working from your workspace plus whatever it can pull in, and the pulling is the weak part. I asked for recent pricing changes at three SaaS companies and got a blend of stale data and confident hedging. Perplexity answered the same question with dates and sources I could actually click, and when one source contradicted another, it said so.
Where Notion AI genuinely beat Perplexity: synthesis of my own material. 'Summarize every decision we made about the course pricing, with links to the pages' is a Notion question. Perplexity can't see my workspace, and pasting fifty notes into a chat window is a worse version of the same thing.
So the split I landed on: Perplexity for anything that happened outside my brain, Notion AI for anything that happened inside it. Research starts in Perplexity, and only the distilled conclusions — a few sentences, the source links — get pasted into Notion. My notes are shorter now and more useful, which I didn't expect.
Cost matters too. If you already pay for Notion, the AI add-on is easy money and fine for workspace Q&A. But treating it as a research engine will burn you the first time it cites a 2023 blog post like it's current. Ask it about your notes, not the world.
