The honest comparison
Two briefs, one month: a real-estate walkthrough teaser with zero usable footage, and a repurposing job turning twelve blog posts into LinkedIn videos. Luma took the first, Pictory the second. Then I swapped them, because I like suffering.
For the real-estate job, Luma generated flying shots through spaces that don't exist yet — pre-construction renders brought to life. That's the entire value proposition: footage a camera physically cannot capture. It took maybe thirty generations to get eight usable shots, and those eight carried the whole teaser.
Pictory on the same brief was useless, and that's not an insult — it's an assembler, not a creator. Where it earned its money was the repurposing job: twelve articles became twelve captioned videos with licensed stock footage, batch-produced in an afternoon. The client's engagement went up and my hours went down.
Trying Pictory on generated-shots work or Luma on batch assembly wasted equal amounts of my life. The tools share one word — 'video' — and almost nothing else. Choose by what's missing: if you have words but no footage, Pictory. If you have a vision but no camera, Luma.
