AI Tool Comparison
Gemini's video model is getting scary. Runway's editing tools are why I stayed.
I built the same 30-second promo with each. Gemini generated a clip that made me double-check it was AI. Runway won the parts where direction matters.

The honest comparison
Gemini can generate video now, and the clip it made for my test — a coffee pour in morning light — was good enough that I checked the metadata to be sure. That's where the comparison starts, because Runway has been the default AI video tool for years and suddenly there's a real fight.
Pure generation quality is closer than people claim. Gemini nails physics-adjacent motion and handles text prompts with an almost annoying level of obedience. Runway's output is sometimes prettier, sometimes weirder, rarely embarrassing. If the task is 'make a clip of X,' both get you there in one or two generations.
Runway pulled ahead the moment my task became a project instead of a clip. The 30-second promo needed six shots that matched, consistent color, a text overlay moment, and one shot re-timed to hit a beat in the music. That's an editor's workflow — timeline, generative fill on a specific region, extending a clip a few frames — and that's Runway's home turf. Gemini gives you clips; Runway gives you a workspace.
Cost played in too. Runway's credits vanish fast if you reroll a lot, and Gemini's video came bundled in a plan I already pay for. For occasional clips, that math favors Google heavily. For anyone shipping video weekly, the credit burn is identical and the tooling difference decides it.
My promo used both in the end: Gemini generated the two hero shots it does better than anyone, Runway assembled, fixed and finished. If that keeps being the shape of the work, this was never a versus — but if Google builds a timeline, the story changes fast.
