The honest comparison
Runway Gen-3 is where I go when I have a specific shot in my head: a drone push over a city, a product turning in smoke. It gives you frames you'd never shoot, and the control is real if you learn the motion prompts. But it does not hand you a 3-minute explainer.
Pictory is the opposite. Feed it a blog post or a script and it builds a narrated video with stock footage and captions. The shots are generic and sometimes slightly off, but the thing is done in twenty minutes and ready to post. For a marketing team shipping daily, that finish line matters more than cinematic control.
I tried using Runway for a client's weekly roundup and spent three hours on ten seconds of hero footage. I tried using Pictory for a stylized brand film and the result looked like every other templated video. Wrong tool, both times.
Verdict: Runway when the visual is the point; Pictory when the deadline is the point. They're not competitors, they're adjacent steps in a pipeline most people don't need to run end to end.
