Perplexity Answers Fast. Scite Tells Me If the Answer Survived Peer Review.

For a literature-heavy writing project I ran every research question through both. The difference shows up not in the answers but in what happens three weeks later.

The honest comparison

I was writing a long piece on sleep research and needed actual literature, not vibes. Perplexity is my default research tool, but a fact-checker kept flagging my citations, so I added Scite to the pipeline and ran every question through both for six weeks.

Perplexity wins the first mile, decisively. Ask it something broad and you get a readable synthesis with sources in seconds. It's the fastest way to understand a field you know nothing about. My complaint was always the last mile: its citations point at papers, but they don't tell you whether those papers agree with anything.

Scite lives in that last mile. Every reference comes with the classification that makes it valuable — supporting, contrasting, or just mentioned — so I could see that the confident study Perplexity surfaced had been contradicted by two later trials. That single feature saved me from publishing a claim that would have been embarrassing.

The workflow that stuck: Perplexity to find the territory, Scite to check the ground before building on it. Perplexity alone made me fast and occasionally wrong; Scite alone would be slow and tedious. Running both isn't redundancy — it's the difference between researching and vetting, and published work needs both.
