AI Tool Comparison
Canva Made My Deck Prettier. Tome Made It Shorter. The Client Notice the Second One.
Same presentation, two tools, one month of client work. The surprise wasn't visual quality — it was what each tool does to the story structure.

The honest comparison
I build pitch decks for early-stage founders, and Canva has been my workhorse for years. Tome arrived as 'AI-native presentations,' so I rebuilt the same client deck in both and presented both versions to test audiences. The visual comparison went the way I expected. The structural one didn't.
Canva is a design tool with infinite patience. It will render whatever structure you give it, beautifully — including a bad structure. My original deck was 28 slides of founder-ego content, and Canva dressed every slide like it belonged. Nobody in the test audience could articulate the problem, but their attention died around slide 14.
Tome attacked the structure. Given the same content, it produced 14 slides and cut the section every founder loves and every investor skips. The AI-generated layouts are decent without being stunning, and I fought it twice on things it got wrong. But the narrative discipline came built in, and the test audience stayed engaged to the end.
The workflow I settled on: outline and cut in Tome first, then rebuild the approved 14 slides in Canva when the job demands pixel-level brand control. If you only have time for one and your problem is story, Tome. If your problem is polish, Canva. My clients' problem is almost always the first one, which cost Canva some invoices.
