ChatGPT

AI assistant for writing, coding, and research

ChatGPT is one of the most popular AI tools for writing, brainstorming, coding help, research, and everyday productivity tasks.

The honest comparison

For half a year my 'automations' were ChatGPT conversations with instructions like 'when this happens, remind me to...' — which is to say, they weren't automations. They were me, remembering to prompt. The weekend I finally rebuilt the workflows properly taught me what I'd been paying in hidden costs.

ChatGPT is brilliant at the part I kept misusing it for: designing the workflow. It mapped my lead-handling process, spotted the steps I could cut, and wrote cleaner trigger logic than I'd have managed alone. As a consultant, flawless. As infrastructure, it simply doesn't exist — nothing runs unless I show up and paste.

Zapier is the opposite temperament. Its AI features are modest and sometimes clunky, but the thing actually runs. Lead comes in from the form, gets enriched, lands in the CRM, pings the right Slack channel, schedules the follow-up — while I'm asleep, every time, with a visible history when something misfires.

The division of labor that came out of this: ChatGPT architects, Zapier executes. If you're using a chat window as your ops backend, the problem isn't the model — it's that a conversation can't hold a cron job. Rebuilding took a weekend. I only wish the reminder to do it hadn't depended on me remembering to prompt.
