Nobody Asked for AI Search, But Here We Are

Search engines decided the answer box was more important than the websites that wrote the answers. Publishers are finding out the hard way.

There is a particular kind of silence that happens when your traffic drops 40% in a month and nobody sent you a memo. That is what a lot of small publishers lived through last year, and most of them still are not sure what hit them.

The story the tech companies tell is friendly: AI answers help users get to the point faster. The story the publishers live is different. A question that used to send someone to your recipe site now gets answered by a generated paragraph at the top of the results, and the click never comes.

I am not nostalgic for the old web, exactly. But there was a deal: you make something useful, people find it, you get a sliver of attention in return. When the middleman starts writing the answer itself, the deal quietly breaks.

What bothers me most is how optional all of it felt. Nobody voted. The people whose work trained and fed these systems got no say and no cut. We just woke up inside a new arrangement.

If you run a content site right now, the only honest move is to stop pretending search will save you. Build the email list. Own the relationship. The traffic you are renting was never really yours.
