Why Every AI Sounds the Same (and How to Make Yours Not)

The bland voice isn't the model's fault. It's the prompt's. Here's how to get personality back.

Open any ten AI-written articles and they rhyme. Same openings, same polished hedges, same three-em-dash rhythm. People blame the model. The model is innocent; the prompt is the culprit.

Default prompts ask for 'clear and professional,' which the model interprets as 'maximally average.' Average is safe and forgettable. The voice you're hearing is the absence of constraints, not a flaw in the weights.

Personality comes from specificity. Tell it who it's writing as, what it's annoyed about, what words are banned, and what length feels right. A sketched character with edges produces text with edges. A blank 'be good' produces mush.

I keep a banned-words list and a voice brief for every project now. No 'delve,' no 'game-changer,' no 'in today's world.' The output stopped sounding like a press release and started sounding like a person with an opinion.

The sameness is a choice we made by being vague. Get specific about voice and the model will happily disagree with you, which is the whole point of having one.
