ChatGPT vs Cursor: I Wrote Code in Both for a Month, Then Picked by Mood

I kept both open for a month and used each for the same kinds of tasks: small fixes, a new feature, a confusing bug. Not a benchmark, my actual week.

ChatGPT is where I think out loud. I paste a broken function, argue with it, get a direction. The problem is the round trip, I copy out, fix in my editor, paste back when it breaks again, and context leaks every time.

Cursor lives in the repo. It sees the file three folders over and edits in place, so its suggestions reference reality, not a snippet I happened to paste. For a change that touches five files, it wins without a discussion.

But when the task is 'help me decide the approach,' Cursor is too eager to just do it. I step back to ChatGPT to argue the design, then bring the plan to Cursor to execute. Two tools, one job, and I stopped forcing one to be the other.
