Gemini got meme'd into irrelevance after a few bad demos and one famously edited video. None of that is the model you get today, and it is a shame, because the current version is genuinely strong.
The killer feature is the one nobody talks about: it is native to your Google stuff. Ask it about the doc you wrote last Tuesday, the email you half-drafted, the spreadsheet with the numbers. ChatGPT can do that too, but it feels bolted on. Gemini feels like it was born there.
On raw writing quality, ChatGPT still edges it for me. Gemini is competent and a little flat. But for "answer a question using my actual life," it is the better tool and it is not close.
Where it loses is trust in the output. Google has a long history of confidently presenting things that are wrong, and using Gemini inside Search has not fully shaken that feeling for me.
Try it before you mock it. If you live in Gmail and Drive, Gemini might quietly become your default, and ChatGPT becomes the thing you open for creative work.
