Gemini Wrote My Code in a Chat Window. Replit Actually Ran It.

The pitch I fell for: Gemini lives in my Drive, knows my docs, writes solid code — why pay for a separate AI coding tool? So I pointed it at a small side project and worked from the chat window for a week.

The code was fine. Genuinely fine. The problem came after the code: I had to create the files, run the thing, read the errors myself, paste them back, and pray the context survived the round trip. Every mistake cost me a copy-paste cycle, and by day three my chat history was an archaeology dig.

Replit collapsed that loop. Its agent sees the errors itself, reruns the build, and tries again without me relaying messages like a very tired switchboard operator. The code it writes is not smarter than Gemini's. It just finishes.

Where Gemini kept the win: anything touching my actual Google documents and sheets. When the project needed to read real client data, Gemini's access beat Replit's clean-room approach. My conclusion is unromantic — use the one that can see the problem, not the one that writes prettier functions.
