I needed a batch of consistent product images and assumed Canva's AI could handle it. It can make one nice image. Making twelve that match each other is where it falls apart, because it doesn't think in 'keep this character the same.'
Leonardo does. Presets, character references, fine control over every knob. The first hour was frustrating because there are knobs I didn't know I had. By image twenty, I had a set that actually looked like a set.
Canva's win is zero friction. Open it, drag, done. For one-off social posts that's all most people need, and paying for Leonardo to make a birthday graphic is overkill.
If you make images occasionally, Canva. If you produce them at volume and need them to match, Leonardo earns the learning curve. I'm keeping both; the mistake was thinking one would replace the other.
