Perplexity Summarizes the Web. Scite Summarizes the Debate. For Papers, Only One Counts.

I was writing up a health claim and asked Perplexity first: clean answer, ten links, looked solid. Then I put the key paper into Scite and watched the 'supporting vs contradicting' counts, and the clean answer cracked. Three later studies contradicted the very sentence Perplexity had summarized as settled.

Perplexity is built for 'what does the internet say,' which is great for market facts and terrible for contested science, because it smooths disagreement into prose. Scite is built for 'what does the literature show,' and it shows the disagreement on purpose. For a blog post that might be read by someone who knows the field, that matters.

The workflow that saved me: Perplexity to find the candidate papers fast, Scite to check whether those papers have held up. Perplexity found a 2021 study; Scite showed it had been challenged twice since. I changed the claim from 'research shows' to 'early research suggested,' which is the honest version.

Scite's limit is scope: it lives in scholarship, not the whole web, so it won't tell you a product launched. Perplexity's limit is confidence: it will state a contested point as fact because that's how summarization reads. Use both and you get found-plus-checked instead of found-and-wrong.

Verdict: Perplexity for discovery, Scite for verification when the source is a paper. Citing a claim Scite flags as contradicted is how you lose the careful reader.
