I had a written post and a deadline, no footage, no mic. Canva would have had me building a video by hand, which is fine if you have a vision and time. I had neither, so I tried Pictory.
Pictory ate the blog post, pulled stock clips and a voiceover, and handed me a finished video. It looked like a slideshow with ambition, which is honestly what most social videos are. Good enough to post, not good enough to frame.
Canva's video tool is better when you're crafting something specific, a promo with your branding, a short with exact text. It's design-led. Pictory is content-led: you supply words, it supplies the movie.
If you're recycling existing writing into video, Pictory. If you're designing a video from scratch, Canva. I posted the Pictory version and got more reach than the post ever did, which tells you something about formats.
