I asked ChatGPT to storyboard a video and Pictory to build it — only one made something I could post

Blog-to-video was the task: my client's 1,200-word article needed to become a 90-second social clip. ChatGPT's half of the job was genuinely good — it pulled the three key claims, wrote a punchy voiceover script, even suggested where b-roll would go. As a storyboarding partner, it's excellent.

Then ChatGPT tried to be the video editor, and it can't. There's no rendering, no stock footage matching, no timing. What you get is a script with slide-shaped formatting and encouragement. Pictory took the same script and did the boring half automatically: matched each line to stock clips, added captions, timed it all to a readable pace.

The Pictory output needed fixing — two stock clips were hilariously wrong (a 'remote team' shot that looked like a 2012 stock photo convention), and the auto-captions missed a word I had to correct by hand. But the fixes took ten minutes, versus the hours an empty timeline would have taken.

The pattern I've settled into: ChatGPT for the script and the cut list, Pictory for assembly, and a real editor only when brand polish matters. Pictory's stock library is its ceiling — if your video needs your actual product on screen, neither tool saves you from filming.

Choose by what you hate doing. If writing scripts is the wall, ChatGPT removes it. If editing is the wall, Pictory removes it. If you hate both equally, this pairing is the cheapest way to never think about it — and yes, you'll spot the stock footage. Everyone does.
