One writes papers' cousins, the other checks if they exist — Scite and Writesonic don't overlap

I got roped into drafting a whitepaper for a client and reached for Writesonic, since it's good at long-form marketing-style content at speed. The draft came out fast and fluent with that certain agency sheen. It also cited four studies. Two existed, one was misattributed, one I'm fairly sure was assembled from spare parts.

This is the moment people lump both tools into 'AI writing' and pick by price. Wrong bucket. Writesonic is a marketing content machine — blogs, ads, landing pages, things where fluency matters and facts get checked by a human before shipping. Scite doesn't write anything. It tells you whether a claim is supported, contradicted or just mentioned by the papers that cite it.

The repair job: I ran every factual claim in the draft through Scite's citation checks. The two real citations survived, the misattributed one got corrected to the actual study, and the phantom got replaced with a real paper that said something slightly less convenient but true. The whitepaper got slower and worse-looking and passed review on the first submission.

Since then my rule for anything with stakes: Writesonic produces, Scite verifies. They hand off like a writer and a fact-checker who don't like each other but respect the process. Marketing copy without claims can skip Scite entirely. The moment you write 'studies show,' you're in its jurisdiction.

If you're choosing one: content marketing teams need Writesonic; anyone touching research, health, finance or legal claims needs Scite far more than they need another writer. The dangerous setup is the reverse — a great writer with no checker, shipping confident nonsense at scale.
