Zapier Moves Data. Perplexity Finds It. I Tried Using One for the Other.

Zapier is plumbing. When a form fills, push the row to a sheet, ping Slack, tag the CRM. It doesn't think; it routes. That's its strength. The moment you ask it to 'decide whether this lead is worth it,' you're bolting a brain onto pipes it was never meant to hold.

Perplexity, meanwhile, is great at 'what's the latest pricing for competitor X' but it can't act on the answer. I tried a janky setup where Perplexity researched and a script wrote the result somewhere, and the maintenance cost was absurd for what a five-minute manual check covered.

The lesson landed when I realized I was automating the part that took thirty seconds and hand-doing the part that took an hour. Zapier should move the output of a decision, not make the decision; Perplexity should feed a human or a real agent, not pretend to be one.

Verdict: Zapier for the known path, Perplexity for the unknown question. Stitching them is possible, but most 'why don't they combine' ideas die once you price the upkeep.
