Translate a document with ChatGPT without losing the structure

Paste the whole file, keep the headings and lists, and ask for a faithful translation instead of a paraphrase.

The usual mistake is pasting a paragraph at a time, which loses the document's shape and lets the model 'improve' your wording as it goes. Feed the entire file in one prompt so ChatGPT sees the headings, bullet lists, and order.

Tell it explicitly: translate, do not rewrite, and preserve every heading level, list, and table. If you want a specific register (formal, casual, technical), say so once at the top, not per section.

For long docs, break at natural section boundaries and translate section by section, then stitch them back. This keeps context tight and stops the model from drifting or summarizing the middle.

Always re-read the output against the source. ChatGPT is good at languages but will silently 'fix' a typo in the original or drop a footnote. A quick diff of headings catches most losses.

Use this for emails, specs, and help docs where meaning matters more than style. For marketing copy, let it adapt tone afterward in a second pass.
