Design quote t-shirts in Ideogram — the one AI tool that renders text you can print

Every AI image tool draws beautiful shirts with gibberish on them. Ideogram renders actual words, which makes the print-on-demand workflow real: phrase, layout, mockup, listing.

The text-on-shirt problem killed AI print-on-demand for two years: gorgeous designs with letters that dissolved on close inspection. Ideogram's text rendering changed that — it draws readable, well-set typography, which turns shirt design from art direction into phrase selection. The workflow from idea to listing is now an evening, and the craft is mostly in the words.

Start with the phrase, because the phrase is the product. The best-selling quote shirts are specific enough to feel discovered and general enough to wear in public — niche identity ('soil over spreadsheets'), gentle humor, or tribal belonging. Generate ten candidates and stress-test each: would someone outside the in-group ask about it? Would someone inside it wear it to dinner? Two yeses or pass.

The Ideogram prompt needs three parts: the phrase in quotes (verbatim, or you'll get creative spelling), the layout intent ('centered arched text, three lines, distressed vintage font'), and the shirt context ('design for apparel, flat print, single color'). One color or two is the practical rule — screen-print economics and fabric both punish gradients, and single-color designs survive more garment colors.

Review renders for the details that matter at print size: letter spacing on the arc, any letterform that got decorative at your phrase's expense, and punctuation rendered as ornaments. Ideogram gets typography right far more often than any alternative, but it's still an AI — generate four variations of the winning prompt and pick the one where every character is earning its place.

Then the unglamorous end: upscale, put it on a mockup (your print provider's generator or Ideogram's product shots), and check the design at thumbnail size — most shirt buying happens in a grid, and a design that only works full-screen won't sell. List, and let the market tell you which phrases to make variants of. The tool removed the design bottleneck; the taste in phrases was always the moat.
